A change of emphasis

Article Abstract:

Brian Currie is the new president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). He is a 31-year veteran of accounting firm Arthur Andersen, which he joined fresh out of the Royal Tank Regiment in 1959 and served in various capacities until his retirement in 1990. He was made managing partner of Andersen's London office in 1977 and chairman of the company's partnership council in the early 1980s. Currie has also been an active member of the ICAEW, serving as chairman at one time or another of its Business Law Committee, Practice Regulation Directorate, Chartered Accountants Joint Ethics Committee and Audit Registration Committee. As president of the Institute, Currie would like to achieve several goals, including improving communication with Institute members, accelerating the implementation of the Swinson review of accounting regulation, and enhancing the effectiveness of the Consultative Committee of Accountancy Bodies.

Would a DG solve the profession's problems?

Article Abstract:

The accounting profession in the UK suffers from a number of problems. Among these are the issue of creative accounting, the interpretation of unexpected business failures as audit failures, and the internal problem of self-regulation. Some members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales seem to think that all of these problems will be resolved if the Institute becomes a trade association and appoints a director general (DG) for the Institute. These members are calling for a DG to head lobbying efforts to protect Institute members from too much regulation and to raise the Institute's public profile. It is argued that a DG would not make much of a difference in the state of the accounting profession. A DG should be appointed if the majority of Institute members desire it, but it should not be seen the panacea for the profession's many ills.
