A critical review of biomechanical, epidemiological, physiological and psychophysical criteria for designing manual materials handling tasks

Article Abstract:

Many sets of criteria exist to assess acceptability of manual materials handling (MMH) tasks. These criteria, which have accumulated over four decades, are based on psychophysical principals, biomechanics or physiology. Many of the criteria are useful, but they also have flaws and shortcomings, and physical injuries related to MMH continue to occur. Each disciplinary approach contains areas which need more research, and there is also a need for more epidemiological studies.

Cross-sectional investigation of task demands and musculoskeletal discomfort among restaurant wait staff

Article Abstract:

A cross-sectional study of task demands and musculoskeletal discomfort among a sample of 100 wait staff in ten casual dining restaurants was conducted. Of the 100 subjects, 42 percent reported experiencing musculoskeletal symptoms in the year 2005, with the lower back area reported by 18 percent, and shoulder reported by 11 percent with the most frequent symptoms reported in the responses.

The effect of workstation and task variables on forces applied during simulated meat cutting

Article Abstract:

The factors related to force and postural exposures during a simulated meat cutting task are investigated. The results indicate that the variables can act and interact to modify the kinematics and kinetics of a cutting task.
