Canada should first see how the European Monetary Union performs before considering whether to adopt an integrated North American currency. An integrated currency means losing control in relation to fiscal policy. On the surface, an integrated North American currency is tempting since the US represents 75% of Canada's foreign trade. Furthermore, Canada is integrating its accounting standards with those of the US'.

The state of the stock market between 1999 and summer 2000 is discussed. It is suggested that investment in the standard businesses was not lucrative but information technology firms were. This boom is compared to those in history and it is suggested that firms do not learn from the past.
