A shoeshine and a smile

Article Abstract:

The banking industry has focused on fee-based products to improve its profitability because of the low returns that loans generate. The situation has posed problems for corporations, even for those with long-standing relationships with commercial banks, because of limited credit offerings. Other factors that contributed to the credit squeeze were the exit of Japanese banks from the US market, the numerous mergers and acquisitions that swept the industry and increased pressure by shareholders on banks to improve their return on investment.

The efficiency ratio stunts revenues

Article Abstract:

Banking institutions in the US have been overly eager to generate more profit by implementing methods which decrease non-interest expenses (NIE). Scores of employees have been fired from their jobs in the desire to lower NIE and increase profitability. However, the haphazard manner by which employees were removed are bound to negatively affect firm competitiveness and revenue. Banking managers should not concentrate solely on NIEs and formulate better risk management measures that generate increases in revenue.
