Aim firms braced for crackdown

Article Abstract:

The UK Alternative Investment Market (Aim) is likely to be subject to a clean-up at the start of 1997. Two Aim directors reportedly face Stock Exchange life bans. The clean-up will mainly affect nominated advisers, of which there are 64. They have completed a questionnaire which is used in addition to file-inspection visits. Advisers include Gerrard Vivian Gray which advised Firecrest prior to Singer and Friedlander taking over. Firecrest ceased to hold Aim status in Oct 1996. Neill Clark Capital has been connencted to some Aim disappointments.

Why the balance of trade matters

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom balance of trade can help predict stock price changes, and an improvement in the balance of trade tends to be associated with stock price rises. This could be because there is more demand for UK goods, which boosts profits. It may also be an indication of low inflation, which helps stock prices. Savings are usually higher than investment when there is a current account surplus, and this means that real interest rates may be lower, which helps stock prices.

Looking back on a remarkable year

Article Abstract:

The FTSE 100 index rose in Jan 1999, then made less progress in Feb of that year, though there was an uptrend to the end of Jun 1999, despite volatility in that period. The overall mood was bullish, as a result of merger or bid stories, though some household names were not performing well. The market was volatile to Oct 1999. The second half of 1999 was dominated by technology and internet stocks, though initially US interest rates were seen to be a key factor.
