Headlam distributes fabrics and floorcoverings. The company has carried out a number of successful acquisitions and has performed well in terms of earnings. The company mainly supplies independent retailers and is increasing its stake in the market. Headlam acquired Gradus in early 1997 and entered the market for contract flooring for nursing homes and offices. Gradus is considering expansion into pubs and other new markets. Headlam is also considering expansion in mainland Europe.

Gaskell is a carpet manufacturer which has increased gross margins and sales, and which is likely to improve further. The bulk of the company's turnover comes from contract work for pubs and offices. Some 20% of sales are accounted for by the retail trade. The company focuses on the premium end of the market where there is less competition from imports. Gaskell Carpets is a subsidiary which produces tufted and Axminster carpets, and which has boosted exports by 20% during 1997.

Headlam: good floor

Article Abstract:

Headlam is a UK distributor of floor coverings and fabrics. The company has acquired Malie in the Netherlands which will provide a foothold in mainland Europe. The company has also acquired a UK competitor called Mercado from Leeds. Headlam invests some 4 million pounds sterling annually on capital equipment and this has helped boost operating margins. Headlam has performed well in a recession and could perform better once the economic environment improves.
