Air Force lab offers clear alternative to conventional armor

Article Abstract:

The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) is testing a new transparent armor that is stronger and lighter than traditional materials and also stops armor-piercing weapons from penetrating vehicle windows. Aluminum oxynitride (ALON) is being tested as a replacement for the traditional multilayered glass transparencies now used in existing ground and air armored vehicles and the Air Force wants to use the new armor for windows in ground vehicles like Humvee.
