Allied Domecq

Article Abstract:

Allied Domecq's stock price has benefited from speculation about a demerger or merger, but the company has issued poor interim results for 1st half 1997-1998. The company's pre-tax profit was little changed at 318 million pounds sterling, while sales dropped by 5% to 2.21 billion pounds. Allied failed to acquire the Dewar brands from Diageo, and Seagram does not appear to be interested in a deal with Allied. A distribution deal is possible but would take some time to implement. The company risks being overtaken by its rivals.

Seagram

Article Abstract:

Seagram is a Candian company which acquired a controlling interest in MCA for a stake of 24% in DuPont. This was followed by a series of mergers of entertainments companies and Seagram has seen a recovery in its share price which had initially dropped after the MCA deal. Seagram's earnings have been affected by the deal since profits have been lost from the DuPont sale. Seagram faces tough market conditions for its beverages activities but has popular major brands such as Martell cognac and Chivas Regal whisky.

Diageo

Article Abstract:

Diageo was formed by Guinness and Grand Metropolitan just over a year ago, but its share price is unsteady due to uncertainties in developing economies where much of its growth was expected to come from. The group is expecting organic growth for the full year, but if profit expectations come down, so will the share price. There are also added concerns about the fate of LVMH's 10.9% stake and anxieties about Brazilian contagion.
