Double shock

Article Abstract:

The Taiwane stock market has seen a drop in the value of shares from Jan 1995, and a recovery could be underway in Aug 1995. Corporate earnings are strong and economic growth is at between 6% and 7%. There is concern about the attitude of mainland China toward Taiwan, especially after missile tests were announced by China. Domestic financial crises and bad debts associated with the problems of the real estate industry point to the need for reform. This is not likely to occur until after elections in Mar 1996.

Eastern Europe

Article Abstract:

Eastern European stock markets have been affected by the crisis in Asian markets, and by subsequent problems in Russian markets. Poland offers strong fundamentals, and both Poland and Hungary offer opportunities for investors. The Czech Republic is affected by political uncertainty, poor corporate results and a need for structural reforms. There are also a number of concerns about Russia which mean that investors should be wary of investing in this market, although company valuations may appear low.

When barons fall out

Article Abstract:

Russian stock prices have risen in 1997, but the value of the market is still low in relation to the US. Stock prices have been helped by the commitments of Boris Yeltsin to privatization, tight monetary and fiscal policies and economic reform. Russian risk levels have also been reassessed, according to Morgan Stanley. Conflict between industrial and banking heads has caused concern among investors, and this conflict could affect progress toward reform.
