Amey: rail to riches

Article Abstract:

Amey has acquired the Western Infrastructure Maintenance Unit, and this should help boost the company's profitability. The company will take over maintenance of railroad infrastructure within an area from the west of England to Paddington in London, England. Amey is seeking to move away from more traditional contracting activities. The company's facilities management activities include refuse collection and health centers. The company's facilities management activities should bring in a profit of 8 million pounds sterling for 1996, rising to 10 million pounds for 1997, according to Williams de Broe.

Sparkling debut for Prism Rail

Article Abstract:

Prism Rail has been awarded a franchise for 15 years to run the railroad service for London-Tilbury-Southend in England. The company has seen a threefold rise in its share price from the price it was placed at of 1 pound sterling in May 1996. The company may achieve further franchises and could be a bid target. Prism Rail may also perform better in terms of profits than the management's goals. The company forecasts a pre-tax profit of 3.4 million pounds sterling for the 10 months ending Mar 1997.

Head full of steam to Australia

Article Abstract:

GB Railways runs Anglia Railways in England and has a single franchise. GB is part of a consortum that has acquired three railroad passenger services in Australia, with the agreement to be finalised at the end of Oct 1997. The deal has not led to a rise in GB's stock price and analysts see it as undervalued even without the Australian deal. Railroads are benefiting from a rise in passenger growth and from road congestion, though there have been political concerns about railroads.
