An analysis of competitive externalities in gross settlement systems

Article Abstract:

The real-time gross settlement system model suggest that transactions on interbank payment networks may be compromised by the system, especially when banks exploit the system to increase short-term gains. A bank's behavior of withholding payments due to high daylight liquidity costs will affect the information received by other banks in the network, creating a 'noise' that will garble the signals on the setting of optimal levels in reserve holdings, which will in turn adversely affect cash management strategies.

Performance characteristics of private and state-owned banks: the Turkish case

Article Abstract:

The performance of private and government-owned commercial banks in Turkey from 1986 to 1990 is assessed to determine the relationship between interest margins and maturity structures of corporate assets and liabilities. An empirical model is developed using data derived from the financial statements of selected banks. Results show that reforms instituted in 1988 significantly affected bank margins. Moreover, government banks exhibited lower maturities and lower interest margins.
