Apple Computer Inc's Appleseed Navigation Guide and Concepts program won the Best of Category award in the concepts category of the 1992 I.D. Annual Design Review. The Guide concepts is part of Apple Corp's personal navigation assistant project that will utilize handheld components to help users reach their destinations by downloading information from surrounding cellular telephone networks. The designers were praised for their forward-looking attepts to produce smart applications by combining the company's Mac interfaces with emerging technologies.

4500 Disk Subsystem

Article Abstract:

Tandem Computer Inc's 4500 Disk Subsystem won a gold award in the equipment category of the 1992 I.D. Annual Design Review. Modular units housing six 5.25-inch disk drives can be stacked vertically as the user's needs grow. A practical solution to exposed cables was found by providing cableways inside the hollow extruded aluminum frame of each module. The design, which is a radical departure from Tandem's previous ones, is the work of Tandem's industrial design and mechanical engineering departments.
