Archives: time capsules built to last

Article Abstract:

The idea for a time capsule was first propounded by Oglethorpe University Pres Thornwell Jacobs in 1937. The original vision was to provide a way of preserving a thorough record of civilization at the school, which was accomplished four years later with the sealing of the 'Crypt of Civilization.' The first notable project was the Westinghouse time capsule embedded at the 1939 New York World's Fair and the most recent, the Capsula de Tiempo at the Seville World's Fair in 1992. The latter is an open time capsule, a tar pit where people can throw in whatever they wish to preserve.
