Automated support for combat systems for the machinery world

Article Abstract:

The Naval Surface Warfare Center has launched a program to extend the Navy's automated maintenance control system from the ship-machinery domain to the combat systems world. The unit has demonstrated the capability of its the Combat Systems integrated condition assessment system in providing automated maintenance sypport fo the surface ship SPS-49 air-defense radar. The system integrates a range of system process measurements and develops and monitors system-performance curves, and automatically triggers the Expert soft when it detects signals showing potential failures.

Can IT work for ASW?

Article Abstract:

Information technologies (IT) can be applied to network-centric anti-submarine warfare (ASW), but ASW sensors need to be upgraded to boost detection capabilities. A network with an upgraded ASW sensor suite can be used to manage and reduce uncertainty. One potentially significant application is providing dispersed ASW forces with a coherent, common tactical picture. Gauging the benefits of using IT to warfare, in the end, should include a careful examination of the specific conditions, end-to-end capabilities and processes needed to succeed.

Phalanx radar/rolling airframe missile combination offers promise

Article Abstract:

Raytheon Co.'s Missile Systems unit, in cooperation with Germany-based RAMSys, is developing a new shipboard self-defense system called the Sea-RAM. The multiple missile launcher, which is expected to be ready by early 2000, is a ccombination of US Navy's Phalanx weapon system's radar and the Rolling Aiframe Missile launcher. The weapon system hopes to capitalize on recent advances in both the Phalanx system and a new antiair warfare missile.
