BP Amoco

Article Abstract:

BP Amoco has had its planned takeover of Atlantic Richfield blocked by the Federal Trade Commission, concerned about the dominant position that the new company would have in the petorleum industry in Alaska. BP's stock price has dropped as a result of this decision, which it is challenging, arguing that petroleum prices are set in a global market. There are different views among brokers as to how the company's stock price is likely to perform, with Credit Lyonnais rating the stocks a buy, and Williams de Broe rating them a sell.

BP gushes good news

Article Abstract:

British Petroleum has undergone a recovery in the three years to 1996. Brokers tend to be optimistic about the company's shares. They include Morgan Stanley which is impressed by the company's production portfolio and the benefits which could accrue from restructuring refining activities. ABN-AMRO Hoare Govett sees the shares as cheap compared with the petroleum sector as a whole. Kleinwort Benson foresees problems in the business cycle for the petroleum and chemicals industries, while Charles Stanley is concerned about chemicals earnings.

BP near the summit

Article Abstract:

British Petroleum PLC is the second largest company in the UK and no broker from a sample of six rates the company's shares an outright sell. Buyers include Goldman Sachs which is impressed by the company's production profile, and Lehman Brothers, which likes the company's resource base. Williams de Broe rates the shares a buy over the longer term and an immediate hold, while BZW is a holder, and Charterhouse Tilney favors Shell shares rather than those of BP.
