Banks and governance in transition economies

Article Abstract:

A corporate governance survey of banks in transition economies reveals that transition to a market economy has been continually slowed by lags in structural reforms of the financial industries. The study concludes that: privatization of state owned banks should work hand-in-hand with other economic reforms; preconditions should be satisfactorily met before structural reforms are implemented; that regulatory and monetary authorities should be strengthened; that structural reforms should be credible and steadfast, and; outsider recommendations of institutional design should be studied carefully before being implemented.

The corporate governance system in banking: what do we know?

Article Abstract:

The corporate governance of banks is an interesting topic that warrants attention as there may be differences in management across sectors, across countries and across firms. The banking sector is of continuing importance to developed and developing countries and a survey of the current literature available reveals that moral hazards, bank risk taking and alternative mechanisms for corporate control are all being studied. Future research should touch on policy implications, consolidation effects, and moral hazard incentives among others.

Competition and corporate governance: the case of Italian banks

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the Italian banking industry in lieu of corporate governance reveals that the lifting of significant regulatory measures and the need for posting profits has increased pressure on banks both from the inside and from the outside. Deregulation serves to increase the outside pressure on banks while corporate laws tend to increase inside pressure and the increase in competition is expected to pressure banks into performing better.
