Quarto

Article Abstract:

Quarto is a book publisher which has seen a 100% rise in its stock price since 1999, and has benefited from a change in accounting policies relating to new titles. development costs are being written off over three years rather than 12 months, so new titles are assessed on whether they will bring good returns in the initial year. The company has a back list of book titles which could be licensed to web sites, and do not appear as having value on the balance sheet. The company's art publishing business has performed poorly, but could recover. Quart's profit is forecast at 4.75 million pounds sterling for 2000 compared with 4.1 million pounds for 1999, excluding exceptionals, according to Collins Stewart.
