Banking bonanza

Article Abstract:

Consolidation of the German banking industry would be beneficial and two banks plan to merge, but this does not appear to be part of a wider trend. The banks are Bayerische Hypotheken-und Weschel-Bank and Bayerische Vereinbank, both of which have a strong position in Bavaria. Competition authorities are likely to approve the merger which will create the second largest finance house in Germany. Some 15% of the banks' work force is likely to be lost over five years, labor unions estimate.

Northern Rock

Article Abstract:

Northern Rock is a United Kingdom savings and mortgage bank which has seen a drop in its stock price after an initial rise following the company's stock flotation in 1997. The company faces competition from life companies and supermarkets, and faced problems with the industry regulator due to the way that savings accounts were managed. The company should benefit from a securitization deal. Northern Rock is efficient, and this should help strengthen the company over the longer term.
