Beware of the profit-killers

Article Abstract:

Firms can apply activity-based costing as an instrument for creating information that aids in making critical business decisions. Caution must be used in using this method to preserve the business's competitive position. Used properly, it can track costs of activities into the areas of products, customers, business processes and sales channels. However, firms often inappropriately allocate overhead costs in methods which prevent growth by causing products appear more costly.

Some of these include the views which project control as red tape and as an obstacle to empowerment and notions which place excessive importance on vertical flow of information and decision-making. Firms must adopt strategies which maximize employee participation and stimulate them to be creative to best reach the goals of the company.
