Big banks hit at competitors

Article Abstract:

British banks are to charge for usage of their ATM networks by non-bank customers. This could create problems for Egg and other e-banks, and building societies, which rely on the main banks' ATM networks. Meanwhile, the government is investigating the banking industry. Banking investigator, Don Cruickshank, is concerned that ATM charges could mean pressure on customers to move to other banks so as not to have to pay ATM charges. HSBC's Michael Lever argues that big banks subsidise rivals if they do not charge their rivals' customers.
