Big doesn't have to be beautiful

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom unit trusts investing in smaller firms have been popular with investors in 1997. Smaller companies have tended to underperform and look set to catch up with larger firms. They are also less exposed to the export market so less likely to be affected by a strong pound sterling. They should also benefit from increased optimism among domestic investors. Smaller firms may involve more risk, and risk adjusted returns allow investors to assess the balance between perform and risk.

Speculators circle round healthcare trust

Article Abstract:

Healthcare Reform Fund is an investment trust specialising in healthcare companies, especially in the US, and has stakes held by the Liverpool Limited partnership and Scottish Value Trust. Both these investors are seen as predatory, and the Liverpool Limited Partnership is owned by Elliott Associates which has previously sought to exploit discrepancies in the valuation of United Kingdom investment trusts. Healthcare Reform Trust is trading at a discount which it expects to narrow.

Vulture funds don't worry us, say trust managers

Article Abstract:

Two funds are being established to take advantage of opportunities offered by United Kingdom investment trusts that are performing poorly. The funds will be named Advance Developing Markets Trust and Advance UK Trust and are being set up by Progressive Asset Management. They will acquire stakes where trusts have wide discounts which could include Ivory and Sime Enterprise and Healthcare Reform Trust. Fund managers argue that they are already seeking to narrow discounts.
