Blockbuster drugs fuel growth

Article Abstract:

The Swedish pharmaceutical industry has increased its exports in the 1990s, helping the Swedish economy. Pharmacia and Upjohn and Astra are both major Swedish pharmaceutical companies. Pharmacia and Upjohn was created through a merger and is among the ten largest pharmaceutical concerns world wide. Astra is seen as dependent on Losec, a treatment for ulcers, and analysts express concern over the dependency on one drug. Pharmacia has grown through acquisitions, while Astra has grown organically.

Exporters face up to difficulties

Article Abstract:

Sweden's recovery from the early 1990s recession has been aided by a strong export performance. Exports are likely to grow more slowly in 1996, and this could bring problems. Sweden depends on a few large companies for much of its exports. These companies include Volvo, Astra and Ericsson. The Swedish krona increased its value by 10% in 2nd half 1995, and a slowdown in western European economies due to a drive to meet Maastricht criteria is affecting Sweden's key market.

Forestry's fortunes falling fast

Article Abstract:

The Swedish forestry industry is entering a downturn in the market for pulp and paper. Prices have risen rapidly and this has led to inventory build-ups. Fine paper saw stocks increase in 1st half 1995, and the pulp market was affected later in the year. Production of pulp and paper has been reduced in Sweden as a response to this trend. Competition with Finland is still strong, and Finnish companies have consolidated, while Swedish companies have yet to do so.
