Bols Wessanen

Article Abstract:

Bols Wessanen is a Dutch food and drinks company which was created from the merger of Wessanen, a cheese company, and Bols, which specialises in spirit drinks. The merger may have been motivated by the need for protection against bids. Sales to Italy and the US have been affected by the high value of the Dutch guilder. Operating profit increased for the drinks division, despite a disappointing performance in Argentina, Spain and Germany. Interest charges have affected profit and earnings growth is likely to be slow.

Glenmorangie: neat whisky

Article Abstract:

Glenmorangie has invested in premium brands and reduced its dependence on the production of bulk whiskey. The company has invested 12 million pounds sterling in production facilities at Broxburn, Scotland and has capacity to increase output by 100%. This should lead to a drop in the cost of production and boost margins. Sales of single malt whiskey are increasing more rapidly than whiskey sales as a whole. The company could also be attractive to a drinks major.

Scotch off the rocks

Article Abstract:

Burn Stewart is a UK whisky distiller which should benefit from heightened product awareness as TV spirits advertising restrictions are lifted in the UK. Whisky has undergone a decline in the UK, though the drop in consumption may be stabilising, and whisky is still fashionable in some other countries. The company is vulnerable to being taken over and this increases the attractiveness of its shares, as does its value as a recovery stock.
