Banks are beginning to use new methods to determine credit risk as commercial lending volume surges upward, totalling $1 trillion in 1997. Management goals and human resource issues are being scrutinized along with more traditional processes such as debt-to-equity ratios. Banks are also switching their focus from balance sheets to cash flows to assess leverage.

Deutsche fights for respect

Deutsche Bank is facing many difficulties in its efforts to become a global player. Several mergers have reduced its status in Europe's banking industry and officials anticipate a $2.1 billion write-off for losses due to the Asian financial crisis and restructuring costs. It has, however, adopted the euro currency structure to draw cash management clients.
