Building a competitive Canada

Article Abstract:

Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants's new second vice-chair, Beverley A. Brennan, would like to see Canada's knowledge-based companies lead in the country's efforts to gain global competitiveness. The finance vice-president and corporate secretary of agricultural biotechnology firm Philom Bios sees a role for the accounting profession in promoting economic growth through high-technology companies. In fact, she believes that accountants have a responsibility to contribute to the competitiveness of Canadian firms.

New standard-setting chairs

Article Abstract:

The Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants isset to organize new chairs for three of its standard-setting committees. The Auditing Standards Board and the Joint Steering Committee have remained under Ian Murray and Jim Sylph respectively through Oct 1 1993. On Nov 1 1993, the Public Sector Accounting and Auditing Committee will be headed by Allan Manuel.Murray was designated a CA in 1976, while his counterparts were recognized as CAs in 1968 and 1969.

Beyond club med

Article Abstract:

Canada worked for inclusion in international trade relations following free trade negotiations between the US and Mexico in 1990. Canada's attempt at an agreement was successful. With the pending advent of the North American Free Trade Agreement, the country stands to gain much from trade and investment opportunities in Mexico. Accounting firms and other major businesses are developing operation bases in Mexico.
