Calling time on the mammoth trusts

Article Abstract:

There has been a call for large, general, international investment trusts from the United Kingdom to become leaner. SBC Warburg Dillon Read argues that trusts should use a change in regulations to stimulate a change in trusts. Restrictions on tax advantages for investing in international stocks will end, with the introduction of individual savings accounts. Warburg argues that many trusts should use predictions on geographical markets more aggressively, or use the MSCI World Index as a benchmark and seek to beat it.

Watch this space

Article Abstract:

Stockholders in United Kingdom investment trusts have seen a number of bids, buy-back proposals and other developments. These include bids for General Consolidated by Martin Currie and Geared Income. Investors have not been enthusiastic about vulture funds which are geared to acquiring stakes in trusts with wide discounts. The launch of Advance Developing Markets has been postponed indefinitely, while Advance UK has raised less than expected.

Wounded tigers

Article Abstract:

Investment and unit trusts from the United Kingdom focusing on the Far East have been affected by stock price falls and currency instability in these markets. These problems could continue, and investors may wonder whether to sell. Asian unit trusts have already seen selling in 1997. Investors should sell if they are compelled to do so over the year from Oct 1997, but otherwise should bear in mind that the market may be reaching a low point.
