Chemicals companies seek new formula for success

United Kingdom chemicals companies have been affected by the high value of pound sterling and an increase in the price of commodity chemicals in 1994 and 1995. Specialty chemical companies then stockpiled raw materials but sales were affected by the end of recession. Specialty producers could see a revival in their fortunes, according to some analysts, and they will be aided by low petroleum prices and a drop in ethylene prices. Allied Colloid attracted a bid from Hercules which was double the price of its stock three months previously, and further bids could materialise.

The United Kingdom chemical industry has seen profit warnings from ICI and Albright and Wilson. The strength of pound sterling, price competition, a drop in demand for basic chemicals, and concerns about Asian markets have all affected the sector and led to profit warnings. Some raw material prices could also rise if there is a rise in petroleum prices. Price competition has intensified because some exports destined for Asia can no longerbe sold there so have to be sold elsewhere.
