Clinton trip to Quincy a PR success

Article Abstract:

Quincy, IL-based newspaper The Quincy Herald-Whig received less than one weeks' advance notice that Pres Bill Clinton would be visiting the town on Jan 28, 2000. Since 1903 was the last time a president had visited the town, the newspaper staff went into overdrive during the days preceding the visit to cover it from every conceivable perspective while preparing and launching a variety of sales and marketing activities. The newspaper has generated almost $39,000 from the activities relating to the visit since Jan 28, 2000, and this figure is not even the final tally.

The newspaper's proper role in the community

Article Abstract:

The role of a newspaper is linked to the community it serves. For a newspaper to thrive in competition with other emerging sources of information in the world, it must continue to be a pro-active voice of the people in the community. This is borne out by studies that suggest that newspaper in smaller communities with a stronger sense of community values tend to outperform their counterparts in larger metropolitan areas.
