Cole bombing in Yemen: Five years since attack

Article Abstract:

Five years after the terrorist bombing of the Navy destroyer Cole in Yemen on October 2000, US policymakers are pondering over the possible recurrence of such an attack and if so, what they could do to prevent it. Navy and contractors have attempted to devise means and systems to prevent further such attacks and the design of the new Littoral Combat Ship is one such means, which would have the gun-power to defeat 'swarm boats,' the timely high-speed boats piloted by terrorists bent on sinking an aircraft carrier with multiple bombs.

Deep DD(X) destroyer cuts seen difficult

Article Abstract:

The lawmakers on the House Armed Services Committee imposed a $1.7 billion cost cap on the DD(X), half the estimated cost. Admirals claim that the cost reduction in the Navy's next-generation DD(X) destroyer might harm the vitally needed future ship capabilities, as a result of which, DD(X) would be unable to perform many intended missions, including near-shore combat.
