Comparison of driving performance on-road and in a low-cost simulator using a concurrent telephone dialling task

Article Abstract:

Driving simulation is an important part of automobile human factors research, although high-fidelity driving simulators can be expensive to build and operate. A low-cost, fixed-based simulator has recently been developed by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI), and its validity in conducting studies of driving performance is examined. It showed good relative validity for assessing decrements in driving performance linked with dialling a car phone.

Head tilt during driving

Article Abstract:

It is believed that drivers tilt their heads while going around corners in response to centripetal forces. Driving behaviour in the presence of centripetal forces was tested to distinguish between the use of visual and gravito-inertial force reference frames. There was a strong correlation of the tilt of the head with a visual aspect of the road ahead, supporting the use of predominantly visual reference frames for driving tasks.

Comparative study of the effects of auditory, visual and multimodality displays on drivers' performance in advanced traveller information systems

Article Abstract:

Research describing driver reaction and performance under differing conditions of information complexity is presented. In-vehicle displays were used to test drivers of different age groups.
