Comparison of organic and sustainable fed cattle production: a South Dakota case study

Article Abstract:

The estimation of a Producer Organic Index (POI) and a Producer Sustainability Index (PSI) allows the comparison of organic and sustainable fed cattle respectively. POI reflects the current production standards for organically certified beef and PSI reflects the cattle producers' ability to conserve natural resources on a long-term basis. A study of 102 cattle producers in South Dakota shows the average values of POI and PSI are 49 and 66 respectively. These indexes and the study's methodology can provide important feedback for policy makers and cattle producers.

Intensive rotational grazing for dairy cattle feeding

Article Abstract:

Intensive rotational grazing involves the use of portable fencing and watering systems in rotating cattle among paddocks with the goal of optimum growth and consumption. This method resulted in higher profits compared with conventional confinement systems since it brings about improved animal health and reproduction and promotes better forage management. The only disadvantages of such a system were that it entails more labor to move the animals and that it is highly sensitive to the weather.

Profile of organic dairy farming in Ontario

Article Abstract:

Results of a study on the production and management strategies used in organic dairy farms in Ontario show that organic farming is suited for small and large farms, is more labor-intensive and is economically profitable. The organic farms studied were characterized by crop selection and rotation, use of composted manure and management instead of synthetic fertilizer and biocides, and the reduced use of purchased feed and livestock.
