Towards safe and reliable software for Eurostar

Article Abstract:

All operational aspects of the Eurostar train are controlled and monitored by the Informatique system software which was produced from more than a hundred functional specifications. The train was designed by the GEC ALSTHOM Transport Division, with the software tested on a simulation system that allowed the reliability of the eventual delivered software to be enhanced and quantified. The Informatique system comprises 10 real-time controllers and 28 programmable logic controllers which are connected by a dual-redundant network. The software system is examined.

Data for software systems important to safety

Article Abstract:

Judgement must be used when considering the data preparation required for software systems where safety aspects are vital, such as for a nuclear power plant. Data errors can be more easily removed than software logic errors or requirements errors. A written data plan should be submitted which clarifies the methods of data processing, storage and identification used. Consistency checking and automatic error trapping are highly useful in error removal. Methods of data validation, verification and preparation are examined.

Software estimating and metrics: a pragmatic approach

Article Abstract:

Software estimating involves a number of difficulties and lack of understanding over concepts. These difficulties are evident in a number of fields, and they can be illustrated using a military simulation environment. Software estimation relates to the size of the task in terms of both time and effort. Marconi Simulation has set out guidelines for software estimation activities. The guidelines are the result of seix years' refinement for bidding and tendering.
