Hopes rise for future on a divided island

Article Abstract:

United Nations secretary general Kofi Annan's peace plan proposed unification of Greek and Turkish Cyprus. But the Greek Cypriots rejected the plan because only half of the Greek Cypriots could reclaim their homes after reunification and that the cost of implementing the plan would cripple the country's economy. Cyprus having joined the European Union (EU) hopes for a better future while attracting foreign companies because of its low corporate tax rate, strategic location, modern banking and legal infrastructure, excellent telecommunications network and educated workforce. The benefits of reunification for Cyprus are examined.
