Conception of the cognitive engineering design problem

Article Abstract:

Cognitive engineering as a discipline offers an alternative practice which addresses problems concerning cognitive design. Important elements in its development as a discipline include use of models, values, design principles and exemplars. These elements are anticipated to improve the effectivity of cognitive design. However, each has to be realized before the design problem, including the creation of a worksystem, can be addressed.

Cognitive engineering as the development of information spaces

Article Abstract:

The development of informational space is perceived as a possible alternative concept of cognitive engineering. John Dowell and John Long, developers of cognitive engineering, claim that its conception must precede other components of the discipline matrix. However, it was proposed that other values can be adopted to create other options and develop cognitive engineering as an information space for human activity.

Improving engineering design - contributions of cognitive ergonomics

Article Abstract:

The factors affecting problem-solving in engineering design are analyzed. It is shown that engineering designers use different strategies to analyze design requirements and problems, select general principles to solve problems and generate specific solutions. Thus, effective design methodologies are those that provide engineers with flexible, heuristic guidelines rather than stringent algorithmic rules.
