Future directions in macroergonomics

Article Abstract:

The history of ergonomics can be described as military ergonomics in the 1950s, industrial ergonomics in the 1960s, ergonomics of consumer goods and services in the 1970s and computer ergonomics in the 1980s. It is expected that the 1990s and early 2000s will be the phase of both macroergonomics and cognitive ergonomics. Future orientation in macroergonomics are posited and macroergonomics as agent of change, total quality management strategy, and human centred work system design method is discussed.

Broadening the cognitive engineering horizons: more engineering, less cognition and no philosophy of science, please

Article Abstract:

Cognitive engineering (CE) as a discipline can be effective when its scope is expanded to include other aspects of engineering. CE's principal aim is to improve interaction between human factors and technological systems. It is designed to address problems concerning complex interfaces. However, it is also important to consider other human performance problems, particularly those relating to calibration, maintenance and testing.
