Covering the cost of care in old age

Article Abstract:

A United Kingdom commission examining Long Term Care for the Elderly has recommended that general taxation should fund nursing care, while help for housing and living costs should be means tested. Free nursing care could cost between 800 million pounds sterling and 1.2 billion pounds annually. Private nursing care cost an average of 325 pounds sterling per week between 1997 and 1998, while residential care cost 252 pounds. There are risks attached to giving away assets to children to avoid having to use them to pay residential care, since these assets may be needed. There are a number of savings products to accumulate funds to pay for care, and the type of product that is most suitable depends on the age of the investor.

Using sterling to put pounds in your pocket

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom investors seeking to benefit from astrong pound sterling can invest in currency funds and move between denominations. They can also invest in companies importing to the UK, and in overseas equities and real estate. Overseas goods offer good value, and shopping trips may be worthwhile since the savings made can offset the cost of the journey. Foreign holidays also offer good value, and the rates offered for buying currencies should be compared.
