Credit where profit's due

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom investment trusts have varied in terms of performance but on balance have performed better than unit trusts in the five years to 1998. Investment trusts are able to gear up performance using additional borrowing. Average discounts rose in 1997, but this is not a problem for long-term investors. Discounts are not likely to widen further, partly because predators are seeking to exploit them, and a number of trusts have moved to new managers.

Flashes of genius

Article Abstract:

Biotechnology investment trusts are available to United Kingdom investors and offer both large potential rewards and high risk levels. Stock prices of biotechnology companies can fall rapidly after bad news is released. Trusts specialising in the sector are a way of spreading risk, though if one company is hit, this can affect the portfolio as a whole. Investors should take a long-term view due to the length of time it takes for products to achieve commercial success.
