Critical factors affecting the planning and implementation of major projects

Article Abstract:

A quantitative cross-sectional analysis of 68 recorded cases of major projects was performed in order to assess the significant factors that influence the planning and implementation of such projects. Data gathered from the case descriptions were then used for coding the variables that characterize the project contexts, project planning and implementation processes, and project outcomes. The variables affecting the context, process and outcome were then determined through factor analysis. On the other hand, the effects of context on process, and context and process on outcomes were identified through regression. Results show that there are contextual variables that make significant impacts on the project planning and implementation process that also produce indirect impacts on the outcomes through the project processes. It was also discovered that both the variables associated with the context and process directly influence outcomes.

An application of metric conjoint analysis for the evaluation of top managers' individual strategic decision making processes: a research note

Article Abstract:

Metric conjoint analysis refers to analytical techniques that have to do with the inductive separation of the various components of the decision process and employing interval-scaled preference rating data. It was proposed that metric conjoint analysis can be used to examine top managers' theories-in-use as they make strategic decisions. The use of this analytical method for such a purpose was demonstrated in a descriptive field study examining the decision rules of 33 CEOs from the manufacturing sector regarding strategy-structure-environment alignment.
