Crummy little jobs

Article Abstract:

Graphic designers should take the opportunity of transforming the most mundane of objects to have a positive impact on society. They have typically avoided such projects in favor of more publicized assignments. However, social activism in this field may also come in the form of changing very commercial media into one that carries a subtle yet subversive social or political message. Another way is to take less-noteworthy publications such as junk mail, urban signs or tool catalogues and design them to be more intelligent or aesthetically pleasing.

Love inn

Article Abstract:

Chic designs that evoke class and at the same time exude mass market appeal can be seen in the interiors of Schrager's hotels. Gilded staircases, terracotta planters, tall curtains are some of the touches that can be found in his places. Teaming up with French designer Philippe Starck, the duo's strategy involves renovating existing hotels and adding signature flourishes. A big portion of the budget is allotted for the structure's finishes and furniture to give it the mark that is unmistakably Schrager's.

The mouse's new houses

Article Abstract:

CEO Michael Eisner carefully combines planned design and good taste and applies this to Walt Disney Co. A disbeliever in altruistic design, he thinks that graphics, architecture and landscape design should be an extension of a company's best practices. Disneyland is an example of a carefully designed controlled environment by one of the best in-house design groups. As Eisner sees it, Walt Disney has to upgrade its aesthetic and architecture to leave its stamp on the world.
