Dawson makes an impressive debut

Article Abstract:

Dawson Holdings distributes books and magazines, and has seen a rise in its share price in 1995. The company acquired Faxon, which supplies to US libraries, in 1994, and this increased Dawson's size threefold. The company's pre-tax profit for 1994 to 1995 are estimated at 2.1 million pounds sterling, but benefits of restructuring should be apparent in the following year. Increased price competition in the UK could create problems, and the library supply market is mature.

Sweet talking at Tate & Lyle: despite impressive interim results, Tate & Lyle's shares fell. The market is concerned that booming profits from high fructose corn syrup will be flattened as new US capacity comes on stream. We don't think they will

Article Abstract:

Tate & Lyle, a sweetener and starches supplier had better than expected interim results. However, although European sweeteners and starches profits increased 8%, their contribution fell to less than 40%. Corn processor Staley had sales up 9% with profit margin widened to 19%. Tate & Lyle expects to maintain its market position in Europe, but new corn-milling capacity in the US set to become operations could dampen those profits.
