Coming: a source of competitive benchmarking for retail distribution strategy

Article Abstract:

Retail banks need benchmarks so that they can measure and evaluate the performance of their current strategy against that of the competition. Cognizant of this need, the American Bankers Assn. has teamed up with KPMG to develop uniform measures and tools for generating accurate and usable retail banking information. The joint effort has resulted in the creation of the annual benchmarking service called 'INSIGHT: Benchmarking Retail Distribution,' which will announce its results for the first year in Apr. 1996.

How to turn around retail

Article Abstract:

Most banks know that they can make their retail operations profitable but are saddled by the short-term handicap of inadequate profitability to make the long-term move. The reconfiguration of such operations is nonetheless possible with the adoption of a new pricing strategy whereby frequent users of transaction services that only contribute minimally to earnings would be required to pay higher charges and monthly fees.

Information-based strategies to prevent check fraud

Article Abstract:

The ability of a bank to prevent check fraud can be a source of competitive advantage. The problem of credit fraud poses a serious challenge to the banking industry, given the rising incidence of this crime in recent years. According to an American Banking Assn. survey, banks lost $568 million in 1991 and $815 million in 1993 due to credit fraud. Several steps are suggested to help retail banks prevent credit fraud.
