Flexibility: the next competitive battle; the manufacturing futures survey

Article Abstract:

An international research team conducted surveys of manufacturers on three continents concerning their strategy and cost reduction methods. The Japanese advanced manufacturers attempted to gain maximum efficiency in the trade-off between cost efficiency and flexibility. The US and European manufacturers concentrated on traditional cost cutting and improving quality. The research teams were from INSEAD (France), Boston University, and Waseda University (Tokyo).

Market reactions to announcements of corporate downsizing actions and implementation strategies

Article Abstract:

The effects of downsizing actions and implementation strategies on market performance are studied. The result showed that downsizing had a negative effect on market returns and the effects grow increasingly negative with larger downsizing actions.

Strategic Human Resource Management (HRM) theory suggests that practices can have an impact on performance outcomes. Research found that downsizing is not followed by improved organizational performance.
