The role of the Monopolies and Mergers Commission in public sector regulation

Article Abstract:

An evaluation is made of the manner and results of implementation by the UK's Monopolies and Mergers Commission (MMC) of its mandate to oversee public entities as provided by Section 11 of the country's Competition Act of 1980. The MMC has recently been involved in monitoring privatizations which is an added responsibility. The entity's reports so far have been mostly on mergers and monopolies although those dealing with the public sector which come in the form of inquiries rank next in number.

Accountability and the internal market

Article Abstract:

The provisions of the UK's Community Care Act that call for the separation of accountability for the purchase of health care from that of providing health service represent a major shift in the management and operational structure of the National Health Service.
