Design technology: software update

Article Abstract:

Details of several design software packages are discussed. Alias Research Inc announced three new products, Alias Studio V3.2, Alias Sketch! 1.5 and Alias AutoStudio V1.0. Evans & Sutherland and Sun Microsystems have unveiled graphics programs dubbed the Freedom 3000 and 1000. The makers claim that these are the fastest graphics programs available. Renderize 2.0 for Windows has been released by Visual Software Inc. A program testing designs for human factors called Jack has been unveiled by the University of Pennsylvania Computer Graphics Lab. Byte by Byte has also released new versions of its Sculpt line of design software.

Logitech 3-D Mouse

Article Abstract:

Logitech Inc's 3-D mouse won a gold award in the equipment category of the 1992 I.D. Annual Design Review. The 3-D mouse is a five-button device for three-dimensional software aplications. It consists of a position reference array with three ultrasonic speakers which send signals to the mouse, the mouse itself which contains three microphones that accept signals from the position reference array and a CPU which converts the mouse signals into button, position and orientation information. The design is the work of IDEO Product Development in cooperation with Logitech in-house designer Jim Barnes.

Myriad Specimen Book

Article Abstract:

The Myriad Specimen Book of the Adobe Systems Inc won a gold award in the graphics category of the 1992 I.D. Annual Design Review. The specimen book was meant to demonstrate the user-variable features of the Myriad fonts. The design was praised for balancing its instructive purposes with aesthetic considerations. The overall effect of the Myriad Specimen Book recalls the flavor of old-type books.
