MicroCosm Virtual Reality System

Article Abstract:

The MicroCosm virtual reality system won a gold award in the equipment category of the 1992 I.D. Annual Design Review. The Microcosm is composed of a standing control Unit tower, the EyePhone XVR head-mounted display and the DataGlove XVR. It's design was praised for successfully uniting complex subsystems and forms to provide a virtual three-dimensional world of sound and images. This is considered a major breakthrough in a new technology. The design was made by IDEO Product Development for VPL Research of Redwood City, CA.

Article Abstract:

'Information Tapestries,' a computer simulation designed by Cranbrook Academy of Art student Abigail J. Schachat, won a gold award in the student category of the 1992 I.D. Annual Design Review. The design conveys the notion that as computers become more common in homes, computer-generated texts and imagery will begin to be incorporated as elements of interior architecture. 'Information Tapestries' shows a room with curtains with interactive LCD screens.

Get a life: An online community offers designers virtual freedom

Article Abstract:

Linden Labs, a San Francisco software company's online virtual simulation called 'Second Life' is populated by 17,000 real-world users from 75 countries. Second Life is one of the first virtual spaces in which users, rather than art teams, supply the content giving them the intellectual property rights to their creations.
