Design without capitalism

Article Abstract:

Decades of socialist rule have done little in advancing the status of industrial design in East Germany. The absence of a conscious effort to improve product design stemmed mainly from economic reasons. The shortage of goods in a socialist economy brought about a non-competitive approach to marketing goods and as such, no efforts have been taken to make products more appealing to customers. The reunification of Germany in 1991, however, signified a drastic change in East German design as the market became more competitive and the demand for better products increased. 'Stunning Eastern Design' was written to document the legacy of East Germany's socialist industrial design.

Victor Moscoso

Article Abstract:

Victor Moscoso, a poster designer of San Francisco, became famous for his contributions to the psychedelic posters. He was born in Spain and raised in Brooklyn. San Francisco's countercultural environment during the 1960s influenced him. Moscoso's works display illegible typefaces, vibrating colors and antique illustrations. He created some of the most emblematic images of the sixties. Moscoso gives the credit of his discovery to Joseph Albers, his professor at Yale University. Moscoso has devoted himself to comic strips and editing issues of the Zap Comix.
