Helicobacter pylori and nonulcer dyspepsia

Article Abstract:

Dyspepsia, or indigestion, affects 25% to 40% of people in the Western hemisphere. No underlying cause can be found in about 60% of patients. When the bacterium Helicobacter pylori was linked to peptic ulcer, doctors suspected it might play a role in dyspepsia as well. However, two 1998 studies of patients with dyspepsia showed that even though antibiotics eradicated Helicobacter pylori, the patients' symptoms did not necessarily improve. This indicates that the bacterium does not directly cause dyspepsia, but it may still cause an ulcer if not eradicated.

USDAW meets the challenge of HRM

Article Abstract:

The introduction of human resources management (HRM) techniques in the workplace has inspired the British shopworkers' union USDAW to issue a guide for members on the topic. The union decided that such techniques were not just a passing fashion and that a guide was needed. Employers tend to pick and choose HRM techniques and there is no all-embracing approach. Techniques surveyed include teamworking, total quality management, and mission statements.

Development of the Institute

Article Abstract:

Objections to the idea of an Institute of Public Finance are raised. The Public Finance Foundation, as the Institute would be known, is expensive and cumbersome to manage. Suggestions for better value for money such as free seminars, and freezing subscription costs are posed. The manner in which proposals have been raised and discussed is also critized.
