Private banks are geared to the upper ranks of British society and are characterized by discretion and a polite, friendly service. Attorneys and accountants introduce clients to private banks, which may take on poorer clients as a service to companies introducing them. Old money has become less common among private bank clients, since many clients have made money from new business activities. Private banks aims to protect clients' capital by gearing their services to the individual needs of clients.

United Kingdom private banks are increasingly affected by competition and have to invest in technological innovation as well as focusing on relationship management. There has been an increase in the number of high net worth individuals, and there are more individuals with new money, while high net worth individuals also aim to have more input into decisions on managing their wealth. They have become more demanding in terms of service levels and investment performance that private banks offer.
