Anti-constellations: exploring the impact of negation on consumption

Article Abstract:

Research into the role of negation in consumer choice indicates that there are two sets of overlapping factors that influence the creation of meaning through negative consumption. These are abandonment, aversion and avoidance, which can be connected with anti-choice, and availability, affordability and accessibility, which can be connected with non-choice. It was established that consumers can produce anti-constellations in response to occupational cues and that they can give information about anti-constellations at product and brand level. It is clear that it is very important to understand how consumers assign meanings to the negative aspects of product choice.
