Doctors call for adequate community care funding

Article Abstract:

The British Medical Assn and the Association of Directors of Social Services have jointly demanded that the British government allocate adequate funds for community care to local authorities. Doctors have viewed government's power to limit the charges local authorities can make as a possible hindrance to the latter's responsibilities for community care. However, Health Secretary Virginia Bottomley has offered the assurance that a strong ministerial team will properly supervise the transfer of community care responsibilities.

Capitation funding system needed to protect 'expensive' patients

Article Abstract:

The UK National Health Service's capitation funding scheme was developed to prevent hospitals from refusing to admit to acute-care patients in probable need of expensive medication. However, an analysis of current hospital pricing systems reveals that prices for the same services vary among different hospitals. Therefore, analysts recommend that hospitals should come up with a more credible pricing system before the capitated payment systems can be fully implemented.

Doubts over EC funding accord

Article Abstract:

UK Trade and Industry Secretary Peter Lilley has announced that European grants will be treated separately in local authority spending programs and that credit approvals will match these grants. This agreement was reached with the European Community Commissioner for Regional Policies. The Association of District Councils has warned that these credit approvals should not be allowed to reduce capital resources for other local programs.
